Due to Lorde's triumphant return, we're venturing back to 1996 (the year yours truly was born)...
The Spice Girls - Wannabe
Let me tell you what I want, what I really, really want: I want to go back to 1996 and live in the Spice Girls' era.
The song made girl power the rallying cry of the '90s. Wannabe introduced a generation to feminist concepts to youngsters long before they were old enough to really know what feminism was.
Toni Braxton - Un-break My Heart
The ballad was written by Diane Warren. Braxton expressed a dislike for the song; however, L.A. Reid was able to convince the singer to record it and include on her album.
Los Del Rio - Macarena
It's hard to believe that this forced dancing classic isn't as old as the bible, people definitely take to the dance floor as if it were gospel.
Macarena is a Spanish dance song by Los del Río about a woman of the same name. Appearing on the 1993 album A mí me gusta, it was an international hit in 1995, 1996, and 1997, and continues to be a popular dance at weddings, parties, and sporting events.
Oasis - Wonderwall
Yes sir, the song all our year 9 music teachers tried relentlessly to teach us on guitar. Songwriter Noel Gallagher told NME in 1996, that Wonderwall was written for his then-girlfriend, Meg Mathews.
However, following their spilt in 2001 he said: "The meaning of that song was taken away from me by the media who jumped on it, and how do you tell your Mrs it's not about her once she's read it is? It's a song about an imaginary friend who's gonna come and save you from yourself".
Spice Girls - 2 Become 1
This was the first of three consecutive Christmas NO.1s for the girl band. The song was inspired by the special relationship that was developing between ginger spice, Gerri Halliwell, and Rowe.
2 Become 1 was originally going to be released in the UK on 9 December, but the release date was delayed a week to let Knockin' on Heaven's Door —a tribute to the children killed at the Dunblane Primary School in Scotland, stay at the top of the UK Singles Chart.
