Another Thursday, another throwback. This week we're going back 45-years to 1972...
Unless you've had a year long social media detox, you'll be fully aware of the vinyl revival. Taking charge of the retro revolution is Sir Elton John. In April the rocket man himself is launching a new vinyl subscription service.
Elton John - Rocket Man
Rocket Man came at a time when the world was cooing over aeronautical tracks. There was David Bowie and his Starman and Space Oddity and there was Harry Nilsson's Spaceman. To date, this track is considered one of Elton's best hits, both commercially and critically.
Alice Cooper - School's Out
Before it became the go-to choice for summer holiday adverts, it was the Alice Cooper's nod to the giddy feeling on the last day of school.
Cooper has said he was inspired to write the song when answering the question, "What's the greatest three minutes of your life?". Cooper said: "There's two times during the year. One is Christmas morning, when you're just getting ready to open the presents. The greed factor is right there. The next one is the last three minutes of the last day of school when you're sitting there and it's like a slow fuse burning. I said, 'If we can catch that three minutes in a song, it's going to be so big.'"
Michael Jackson - Rockin' Robin
This Jackson classic was originally performed by Leon René under the pseudonym of Jimmie Thomas in 1958. It was the biggest hit from his album Got To Be There. It hit No. 1 on the Cash Box singles chart and peaking at No. 2 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts.
Donny Osmond - Puppy Love
Another example of a cover track that defines an artist. Originally record by Paul Anka, it was revived by Donny Osmond 12-years later. The song was also covered by British pop group S Club Juniors in 2002.
T. Rex - Children of the Revolution
T. Rex were an English rock band, formed in 1967 by singer-songwriter and guitarist Marc Bolan. In an era when songs about revolution of one kind or another were nearly ubiquitous, it should come as no surprise that T. Rex would have their own unique take.
