For this week's playlist we're casting our minds back to 2009 for a very good reason...

While Chooniverse is a British-based site, that by no means our ears our shut off to what's going on around the world. Tomorrow the world will be saying a fond goodbye to one Barack Obama's legendary presidency.

As of 5pm tomorrow (GMT) Donald Trump will be President of the USA is hard enough, which makes this farewell even more devastating. In honour of the 44th President of the USA, we're heading back to 2009, the year were it all started.

Green Day - 21 Guns

It's no secret that 21st Century Meltdown flies in the face of conformity. The punk group used their 2009 record to discuss the topic of patriotism in America. Frontman and chief songwriter Billie Joe Armstrong told Q magazine, in May 2009: "It brings up 21st Century Breakdown in a lot of ways, and the 21-gun salute for someone that's fallen, but done in an arena rock 'n' roll sort of way."

During the summer of 2008, it was confirmed that Spears was in the process of recording her sixth studio album following her 2007 iconic breakdown. Spears chose to write much of the material for the album and worked to develop a more pop-influenced record with collaborators she had worked with earlier in her career.

The fifth studio album by the group took on futuristic sounds way ahead of the curve. Fergie has commented on the unusual structure of the song, stating:“I feel that Boom Boom Pow is not your typical first single. It's not the typical, let's do a hooky chorus, and you know, have a feel good-heart love song, or anything like that. It's basically kind of to the left. We've always been kind of misfits, and so it kind of fits. The song is to the left, but it works, because we're being true to ourselves.

Beyoncé - Halo

Eight years later and not a lot has changed, Bey still creates an electric buzz with her ever-growing sound. While her 2016 hit album Lemonade was a tougher, fiery side of the former member of Destiny's child, that's not to say she doesn't have a soft side. Her third studio album I Am... Sasha Fierce was decked out with a flawless femininity, with a vulnerable, yet strong undertones.

Another high flyer. This singer has stood the test of time (if the test of time is lasting two presidential terms) and is set to fill the legendary Super Bowl halftime show. Like many artists whose careers span a decade, there has been an evolution of sound. From first tune to last, all within Obama's presidency.

Taylor Swift - You Belong With Me

Oh how times have changed. From girl-next-door to pop sensation in eight years. When she was still in her teens she broke onto the seen with her country voice and relatable songs. Now she's one of the highest earning, critically acclaimed artists there is. If this is how far she's come in eight year, we can't wait to see where she'll be in another eight years.
