Welcome to the house of fun...
This week's inspiration for our throwback comes courtesy of Q Magazine Awards last night. James Bay, Jack Garrett and Bastille were among those who picked up awards at Camden's Roundhouse. While there was plenty of fresh-meat claiming their awards last night, some music legends got their recognition. The Hall Of Fame award went to none other than two-tone ska band, Madness.
While Madness have had mass success, they have only had one UK No.1 single: House of Fun in 1982/1992. In this week's throwback we're taking a look at the music scene in 1992, what was new on radio and what was topping the charts. Listen to all our throwback classics right here.
Madness - House of Fun
It was released as a one-off single on 14 May 1982 and reached number one in the UK Singles Chart, spending nine weeks in the charts. The song was re-released in 1992, reaching No. 40. It is the band's only number one single in the UK and in 2015 the British public voted it as the nation's 8th favourite 1980s No.1 in a poll for ITV.
Snap! - Rhythm is a Dancer
Rhythm Is a Dancer was the second single by German group, Snap! to reach No. 1 in the UK, the song remained six weeks at the top position in 1992. Still an absolute party anthem, with covers from the likes of Bastille, it is definitely one of 1992's highlights.
Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart
This song will bring back memories for any 90s babies who grew up watching Disney's Hannah Montana. For those of you who don't recognise this classic mullet, he's none other than pop-sensation, Miley Cyrus' dad. Way before she came onto the scene with Wrecking Ball, her dad was climbing the US charts. Other than Achy Breaky Heart's success, 1992 was a year for Billy Ray to remember as it was the year Miley was born.
House of Pain - Jump Around
While this song might be 24 years old, it is still a party favourite. It's still a go to in the American sport world, in fact the song was played during 2015 post season in Gillette Stadium when the New England Patriots scored the final touch down against the Baltimore Ravens. It is the unofficial Patriots victory song at the end of games.
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
The unexpected success of Smells Like Teen Spirit in late 1991 propelled Nirvana to the top of the charts at the start of 1992, an event often marked as the point where alternative rock entered the mainstream
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
Okay, so this absolute classic might not have quite been released in 1992... However, it was all over the charts for 24 weeks thanks to a special revival. Following the release of cult film Wayne's World, starring Mike Myers, the Queen classic got a second lease of life. Check out the magical cinematic moment that saw the tune back into the charts.
